Each fret raises the note by one semitone. At fret 12 the string is back on its open note, an octave up: the same name, higher in pitch.
Neighboring strings sit 5 semitones apart, a fourth, except G and B, strings 3 and 2: between them it is 4 semitones, a major third. That is why a shape that crosses from string 3 to string 2 shifts by one fret.
